One of James' very first Pete paintings, Circa 2001. 

This is an incredible piece of work and a rare find. A true gem for a real Pete the Cat collector. 

Before James ever painted on canvas, he worked on heavy art paper. The very first paintings were quite different than the stretched canvases he finally landed on. The book series had not been written yet and Pete looked more "realistic" than the cool cat we recognize today.  At that time his chosen medium was watercolor, and his works were rarely as blocky or vibrant as the Pete paintings we now identify as his signature style. Next, he moved on to acrylic paint on heavy artist paper but kept a painterly, “watercolor effect” approach, as seen in this piece. Pencil lines can often be seen in his work, and the brushwork has a rapid, layered style he still employes today.
